SORTING AND GRADING
Skillfully trained sorters grade the fruit on grading tables into three
grades. The amount of blemish (external marks) on a fruit or colour will
determine which grade the fruit should be sorted as follows:
• Grade 1: Export fruit with minimum blemish allowed.
• Grade 2: Export fruit with a little more blemish allowed.
• Grade 3: Local market fruit sold in South Africa.
After the fruit is graded it proceeds to the sizer where the fruit is sized
according to pre-determined sizing specifications. Each size can then be
labeled with a fruit label if required.
Packing, Palletizing and Dispatching of fruit
Sized fruit now becomes a “count” and the count refers to the
amount of fruit that can go into a specific carton. Well-trained packers pack
each count to a specific packing pattern to ensure that each carton has exactly
the same amount of fruit. Many different packaging types exist and SRCC
has the ability and flexibility to pack them simultaneously. Fruit
wrappers are also used when requested. Packed cartons are fully traceable
and have the date, time and producer unit code on each carton.
Cartons are then palletized according to the exact specification of the client
that includes the pallet base, 4 protective corner pieces and the amount of
cartons according to the shipping requirements. Each pallet is given a
unique barcode identification that includes amongst others, the destination,
date packed and packing type and is linked to the production unit code that is
on each carton. This enables us to trace each pallet through the entire
logistical chain.
An independent inspector that is appointed by the Department of Agriculture to
ensure that the quality and specifications confirms to the requirements of the
agent and receiver inspects each pallet. After the pallet has received
the seal of approval it is moved into cold storage facilities so that the cold
chain can begin as soon as possible. This ensures that the fruit arrives
at its destination in the best possible condition and is ready to be enjoyed by
the consumer.
